About the course
Yoga Nidra as Therapy is a 10-session course of 17½ hours: Part 1, the Yoga Nidra Foundation Course (7½ hours), and Part 2, five sessions of two hours (10 hours), on using Yoga Nidra to relieve stress, overcome sleep problems and manage pain.
It also covers self-healing of trauma and emotional pain through advanced practices such as 'Pratipaksha Bhawana' (explained in the course), breath awareness and mental rotation of the body parts and systems. Part 2 can be taken separately if Part 1 has been done and practised. Part 1 should have been taught by a Satyananda-trained teacher.
Yoga Nidra is the yoga of aware sleep. In this lies the secret of self-healing. Yoga Nidra is a pratyahara (withdrawal of the senses) technique in which the distraction of the mind is contained and the mind is relaxed.
The course consists of theory, practice and questions. Each day builds on the previous day's practice.
In more detail
Yoga Nidra as Therapy is designed for people suffering from excessive tension and anxiety, sleep problems such as insomnia and insufficient sleep, and pain, physical, mental and emotional. It is a relaxation meditation suited to giving relief and energy, and to disengaging from pain, sorrow and suffering.
In Yoga Nidra the mind is trained to move around the body. Where the mind goes, prana (the life-force) follows, and its movement releases the energy blockages that create tension and pain. Physical tension loosens, and the nerves that carry pain signals to the brain are soothed and strengthened.
Yoga Nidra also works with the breath. Focusing on the breath clears energy blockages in the chakras, so energy flows more freely to the body, the mind and the systems and organs connected to each chakra. The same focus draws the mind away from anxiety and painful memories.
Pain is registered in the nerves and the brain. In Yoga Nidra you train the mind to switch off from the senses and from thought, and so learn to switch off from physical and mental pain. Even a little respite lets the immune system recover and recharge.
Rested and refreshed, you have more strength for self-healing and more forbearance for physical and emotional pain. You also see your situation from a wider perspective, which makes it easier to accept the pain and to let it go.
For chronic problems and ailments Yoga Nidra is a steady help; tablets serve acute conditions. In visualisation you set everything else aside for a while, and you return refreshed, with renewed energy and strength, often seeing the good in your life more clearly. That itself supports healing.
Not part of this course, but recommended alongside Yoga Nidra: a few simple joint-loosening movements, such as the Pawanmuktasana 1 series, to loosen the joints, release stiffness and get prana and blood moving, which also relieves pain.
A little pranayama increases energy, tones the nerves and clears the mind. Easy practices like these, with regular walking, help you manage pain and support general health.
