WHAT IS HAVAN?

Havan is an ancient Vedic fire ceremony, and it’s a way of worshipping the divine. In a havan, we worship the divine through the medium of fire, making offerings in the form of mantras/sacred sounds/in the form of material things that represent the good things in life, like grains, dry fruits, and nuts. We also offer our love and devotion, our prayers and intentions, which get amplified in the flames of the havan.

We can worship the divine in any form — in a stone, a picture, a flower, in a tree, a building, or a mountain. Here, we choose to worship the divine in the form of fire. Perhaps because fire is such a powerful and mysterious thing. Perhaps because fire is so bright, shining and attractive and reminds us of the bright and shining ones, the devas! In fact, that’s the meaning of
Christ — a bright and shining light.

Havan is also a means of purification. Just as fire reduces everything to ashes, to its essence, fire can also transform energy – and transmute our negative energies, problems, pain, karmas and sufferings into another kind of energy. When we offer our negativities, we intend for them to be destroyed. And Then we offer love and devotion, we intend for it to rise up with the flames to the divine, as an expression of our devotion. A havan can energize our projects, our intentions, the good things we want to retain and enhance. If we offer the things we want to increase, the energy of havan will amplify those things. It all depends on your intentions. So in a havan, we have to be very clear about what we want. You have to remain super conscious of what you are thinking. Keep your mind on track with what you are intending.

Havan comes from an ancient Indian Vedic tradition and is accompanied by mantra chants. The power of the mantras increase the effect of flames from the havan. It all goes together, your mental intention and the flames that we are feeding. The mantras can be from any tradition, we have Latin, Islamic, or Hebrew, but here we chant the Maha Mrityunjaya mantra.

The Maha Mrityunjaya is a special healing chant that brings physical, mental and spiritual benefits to all. It is only 24 syllables and we repeat it 108 times, so you’ll soon learn along. Even if you don’t want to chant or don’t believe in mantras, you could listen to the sounds, which is effective in itself. During the havan, we can visualize people or situations, in fact, all the people you know, you could visualize a group of people together as well. Each time we chant a mantra, we end it with “Swaha” and make our offering to the fire. Our intentions then go through the subtle layers of existence to  what we are aiming for. It all depends on your mental focus, intention, and determination that you bring with you during the havan.Havan is like a spiritual tool that harnesses and directs intentions to a particular purpose. A havan can also be known as a yagna, a sacrifice. There’s another type of havan  6, 4known as agnihotra, which is a r fire ceremony exactly at sunrise and exactly at sunset. Once you embark on this sadhana, you have to do it every day.

If you want to join us on-line for havan, you could have an oil lamp or candle ready and  incense if you wish. Have a bowl of offerings — some fruits and/or sweets,, some flowers, a photo that represents the divine to you, an altar of sorts. Make sure you are comfortable and everything’s at hand so you don’t have to keep getting up. You can also follow along with whatever we are doing in the havan. You can download the mantras and chant along. As we proceed with the havan, you can do the things that we are doing. You can also keep a cup of 6water next to you. The vibrations from the havan go into the water, into the surroundings, into the food, the ashes. So, we partake of the water after the havan. We also keep the prasad ready, which is usually rice pudding, or the sweet of fruit mentioned above,  and when the havan is over, we distribute it to everyone or eat it yourself feeling that the Divine is eating through you.

It’s a really nice experience if havan is done in a group. Havan is also a coming together of people as a group meditation or group activity, as a yoga. It would be wonderful if you could join us every Saturday from 5.15 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Each time I do a havan, and I’ve been doing it every Saturday for years, I find that it’s very energizing and my focus improves more and more with each havan. Just the act of focussing and being in the here and now leaves you calm and energized.

We look forward to seeing you at Havan.

Free Havan session every Saturday 5.30-7pm IST.

Let the God of all the worlds protect the middle of eyebrows, Let my eyes be protected by God with three eyes. Let my two eye brows be protected by Lord of the mountain, Let Maheswara protect my ears.

Nasike may Mahadeva , oshtou pathu vrushadwaja,

Jihwaam may Dakshinamurthir dandhaan may Gireeso aavahu

Let Mahadeva protect my nose, Let the God with bull in his flag protect my lips, Let my tongue be protected by Dakshinamurthy, And let my teeth be protected by the Lord of the mountain.

Mruthyunjayo Mukham pathu , Kandam may Naga bhooshana,

Pinaki math karou pathu, Trisooli Hrudayam mama.

Let the winner over death protect my mouth, Let the one decorates himself with serpent protect my neck,

Let the God holding Pinaki bow protect my hand, And the one with trident protect my heart.

Pancha vakthra sthanou pathu udaram Jagadheeswara,

Nabhim pathu virooopaksha, parsou may Parvathi pathi.

Let my breasts be protected by the five headed one, Let the Lord of the universe protect my stomach,

Let my navel be protected by Viroopaksha, Let my nearby areas be protected by consort of Parvathi.

Kati dwayam Gireeso , may prushtam may Pramadadhipa,

Guhyam maheswara patho mama ooru pathu Bhairava.

Let both my waists be protected by lord of the mountain, Let my back side be protected by the lord of Pramadhas, Let Maheswara protect my private parts, And let Bhairava protect my knees.

Jahnuni may Jagad hartha , jange may Jagadambika,

Padou may sathatham pathu loka vandhya sada shiva.

Let my thighs be protected by the punisher of the world, Let my shanks be protected by the Goddess of the world, Let my feet be always protected by Sada shiva whom the world salutes.

Gireesa pathu may Bharyaam , Bhava pathu suthaan mama,

Mruthyunjayo mamayushyam chitham may Gana Nayaka.

Let my wife be protected by the Lord of the mountain, Let the great one protect my sons,

Let the winner over death protect my life, And let the lord of the Ganas protect my mind.

Sarvangam may sada ppathu Kalakala Sada shiva,

Yethath kavacham punyam devathaanaam cha durlabham.

Let all the parts of my body be always protected by Sadashiva, who killed God of death,

This is the holy armour which is not easily available to the devas.

Mrutha sanjevanam namnam Mahadevena keerthitham,

Sahasravarthanam cha asya purascaharameeritham.

This armour of God Shiva, which is called that which is the medicine for death,

If read one thousand times would be preparatory step to go to the sea of his.

Ya padeth shrunu yaannithyam,Shraavayeth su samaahithaha,

So kaala mruthyun nirjithya,Sada- ayushyam samashnute.

If this is read or heard daily, Or explained properly to others,

It would, after avoiding untimely death, Make his life equal to hundred.

Please accept my love and incomplete efforts, with love. Grant me gratification by giving a response to my earnest call.

14.SONG COMPOSED BY SWAMI SIVANANDA

Love, serve, give, purify, meditate, realise,

Be good, do good, be kind, be compassionate,

Enquire ‘who am I?’ know thyself and be free,

you will soon attain immortality,

Adapt, adjust, accommodate, (appreciate)

bear insult and injury the highest Sadhana!

The Time to Be Happy Is Now.

the Place to Be Happy Is Here,

and the Way to Be Happy

Is to Make Someone Happy and
Have a Little Paradise Here

16.IT’S A BEAUTIFUL DAY

Refrain (2 x)

Lord, I thank you for sunshine, Thank you for rain,
Thank you for joy,  Thank you for pain
It’s a beautiful day-ay-ay-ay-ay (2)
Sometimes life is good

But then trouble comes my way

But whatever happens Lord

I thank you for this day

And when I’m feeling trouble

I lift my hands and pray

That youR will be done in the rain or sun

Oh, it’s a beautiful day

I don’t wanna act too high and mighty

cause tomorrow I might fall down on my face

Refrain (2 x)

Lord, I thank you for sunshine, Thank you for rain,
Thank you for joy,  Thank you for pain
It’s a beautiful day-ay-ay-ay-ay (2

I give thanks when I’m feeling lonely

I give thanks when I’m feeling glad

I give thanks in the morning

and thanks in the evening

and thanks when I’m feeling sad

I don’t wanna act too high and mighty

cause tomorrow I might fall down on my face

Refrain (2 x)

Lord, I thank you for sunshine, Thank you for rain,
Thank you for joy,  Thank you for pain
It’s a beautiful day-ay-ay-ay-ay (2)
